Checking if your computer has the latest version

when I go to windows update it says Checking if your computer has the latest
version.......

but it never moves from that page

any ideas?

I have the same problem but I couldn't seem to get past the first step. When
I typed it in, it said that the service name was invalid or something like
that. I have Windows ME.
