I have two machines, one desktop, one laptop, both kept up to date, the
laptop lately goes to "Checking for the latest updates for your computer" and
stays there forever, it never responds. Is there a setting to stop that?

Try registering the following:

Click Start, select Run and type (pressing enter after each one and wait for the
success message):

net.exe stop wuauserv
Press Ok

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll

net.exe start wuauserv

Prior to trying this, I "force fed" the updates by not using the custom
approach and was able to get a number of updates, and then ran Express and
came back OK as not needing them right away. Tried again this morning and it
went into its loop. I did the steps you suggested.

I got one failure on regsvr32 msxm13.dll, "specified module could not be
found". I completed the others and when I try to use Windows Update now I
get, "Website encountered a problem and cannot display the page". Any
suggestions?

It is msxmL3.dll, and not msxm13.dll...

When searching for available updates on the Update site, you see the 0x8007043B error
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu...=en&IsMu=False

So far, so good. I ran the changes, restarted and the updates went through.
But.... it has done that before after a reboot. Will try it again later just
to be sure.

Many thanks!!
