I have Win XP Pro, Version 2002, SP2 and when I go to check for updates, it
sits at the first screen that says "Checking for the latest version of the
update software" and does not go any further. Is there any way to get past
this?

This error may occur if the WUAUSERV and BITS services are not configured properly in
the registry.
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=19&ln=en

or

Try registering the following:

Click Start, select Run and type (pressing enter after each one and wait for the
success message):

net.exe stop wuauserv
Press Ok

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll

net.exe start wuauserv

I have the same problem--hangs at "Checking for latest....."
I am running Win2000 pro, and this started happening right after doing
recent Windows Update-- 6 updates including one for IE6SP1, on Apr. 18.
I also was not able to get to driver download on Intel site. Otherwise, web
browing acts normal.
The question is: should I use the same solution you presented here to
Foxtrot-Ohio?

I hope you can help me with this.
Thanks,
LF/blackdog

The link is also for Win2000.
This error may occur if the WUAUSERV and BITS services are not configured
properly in the registry
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=19&ln=en

I don't have Win2000 pro.

---Ooops, I got carried away with my OS names--influence of XP Pro vs Home
got to me. It's plain old Windows 2000.
I'll try your fix in the morning. Wish me luck.

In the instructions from the link that was provided it states "Under Value
Data.
Add BITS and WUAUSERV to the list of services." What if you do not have this
string? "Value Data", which key does one add? There are 5 different strings 2
of which cannot be used.

Thanks

http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/0x800c0005.htm
0x800c0008 error message

When checking your date (including the year) and time, also check the Internet Time.
Double click on the date/time in the notification/system tray area, select Internet
Time Tab and then select update now. If it’s not already checked, check automatically
synchronize with an Internet Time Server – WinXP. Also check your Time Zone.

NB: SteveL question about BITS and WUAUSERV instructions were answered in his other
posting under "Checking for Windows Updates".
