To help in diagnosis, can you tell us the length of your file:
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\DataStor e.edb

For a fix to this problem, please do BOTH of the following:

1. For 32-bit systems, download and save to hard disk, and then install:
<http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe>

2. (not for Vista) Download and install update KB927891 version 3:
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891>

If the first of these produces an error message about "Update agent already
installed", then execute the installer again manually, with parameter
/wuforce as in (at a comand prompt window):

WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

After the fixes have been installed, doing a Microsoft Update or Automatic
Update might still take some time (though not as much as before) and
processor and disk usage, but it should not lock out user-level interaction
with the system and applications, so it should not be such an inconvenience.

Also see <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494>
"When you use Automatic Updates to scan for updates or to apply updates to
applications that use Windows Installer, you experience issues that involve
the Svchost.exe process"

Hi,

The DataStore.edb is 37MB

I tried to update the windows update agent and I got an error:
Install failed with following error number:
0x8007041d

I tried again with the /wuforce option and I got another error:
Install failed with following error number:
0x80070420

I installed the update KB927891 and restart the explorer and it work!

Now that you have 927891 done, you might now find that the Update Agent
installer will now work.

Alternatively, boot Windows into Safe Mode and try installing the Update
Agent there.
