COmputer: Toshiba Satellite 4GB ram OS: Vista Ultimate I have a 1 month old 0.5TB USB external drive that I use to backup al my data, work, personal stuff, etc - 10 years of my life. I am running vista ultimate. WHen vista starts and the usb is plugged in it usually asks if yo would like to check for consistency and gives you about 10 seconds t cancel the check (by pressing any key). I was walking towards th computer but was too late and windows went ahead and checked fo consistency. The log file for the check is below http://www.nomorepasting.com/getpast...&langoverride= ) WHen vista started I went to the USB drive and saw that it was empt and that I had 0.5TB free space. 10 years of my life -- how do I get my files back? ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++ Log Name: Application Source: Microsoft-Windows-Wininit Date: 3/22/2009 9:28:03 AM Event ID: 1001 Task Category: None Level: Information Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: toshiba-user Description: Checking file system on E: The type of the file system is NTFS. Well, here's a question. When you use a USB (stick) drive you usually
get a system tray icon to "Safely eject / remove". My experience is that while you can mostly ignore this and get away with it on occasions the USB stick will get corrupted and be unreadable. I am not saying your USB drive is the same, but it may be. Also, similar problems occurred if you installed a drive greater than 137 MB without first using a utility or windows patch, remember that? Checking the disk would damage it because the disk check couldn't read the higher data so thought it must be corrupt. That also gave results that look similar, and the disk check did indeed screw up the drive by making corrections. Third is the possibility that the disk had become corrupted anyways and the disk check "Corrected it" by removing unreadable stuff. 1 month old does not mean a guarantee it's not faulty. So not sure what if anything you could now do, check the drive maker's website / forums, see if they do a utility to check the drive out etc. zquad wrote: > COmputer: Toshiba Satellite 4GB ram > OS: Vista Ultimate > > > I have a 1 month old 0.5TB USB external drive that I use to backup all > my data, work, personal stuff, etc - 10 years of my life. > > I am running vista ultimate. > > WHen vista starts and the usb is plugged in it usually asks if you > would like to check for consistency and gives you about 10 seconds to > cancel the check (by pressing any key).
