i know that i have an error on my hard disk and that i need to run chkdsk to
fix it, but when ever i try to schedule chkdsk for the next time i reboot, it
never runs. i have tried running it through the command prompt as an
administrator and by clicking on the properties tab on the disk icon. how
can i run chkdsk? i am not much of a computer person.

here is my computer info...
Laptop: Inspiron 1521
Processor: AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-56 1.80 GHz
Memory (RAM): 1918
System Type: 32-bit Operating System

Please help me...

Perhaps it does. You do not see it.

Say this:

chkdsk.exe /F > C:\users\yourname\documents\checkdiskfile.rtf

The system will tell you that the disk is in use and if you want to run it
at the other system restart,

Say yes.

After your restarted your system, check that file. Could it be your problem?

Otherwise you can do a hard disk check via F2 and BIOS. That will give you a
different information though. It will give you a hardware checkup, will not
reveal lost file headers. Chkdsk,of course will do the latter.

Which one do you want?

Be aware of the chkntfs and fsutil utilities. The command

chkntfs /D

resets default chkdsk /F behaviour, which is to check any drive at startup
that is flagged 'dirty'.

The command:

fsutil dirty set c:

will set the 'dirty bit' for the c-drive.

Under XP, there were 2 or 3 scenarios that caused chkdsk to not execute at
startup. There is information available on the web. Perhaps the most
interesting scenario is that certain keyboard keys being stuck don't make a
PC unusable but do cancel out of chkdsk during startup.

Good luck.

well i tried using chkntfs /D and the fsutil dirty set c: command and the
chkdsk still never runs. when i generate a health report with the
reliability and performance monitor, it still tells me that the disk is
dirty. here is the full message:

Symptom: The VolumeDirty flag is set on the disk
Cause: A logical disk has the dirty bit set.
Details: This disk has been marked as dirty, it may be experiencing errors
or might not have been shut down correctly
Resolution: 1. Run chkdsk on the drive and document any errors identified.
2. If chkdsk determines that tere are errors on the drive run chkdsk /f to
repair the errors.

later on in the report under basic system checks, it tells me that i failed
the logical disk dirty bit check. whenever i schedule a disk check to fix
the problem and then restart my computer, it still tells me that the disk is
dirty. what else can i do to clean it?
