CHKDSK will not run on reboot after Windows Update

After installing the following patches on XP Pro from Windows update site, I
am no longer able to perform a chkdsk after a reboot. I can request a
chdsk on reboot from either Windows Explorer interface or the command
line, however upon reboot, chkdsk doe not run and the system boots directly
into Windows.

Does this mean that the disk or the registry is corrupt? How can I repair
it? Is Microsoft aware of this very serious problem with Windows Update? Is
there some set of patches that must be applied separately?

Patches applied:

KB890046 KB893066 KB893756 KB896358 KB896422
KB896423 KB896428 KB899587 KB899588 KB899591
KB901214 KB898461 KB893803 KB833407 KB873333
KB873339 KB885835 KB885836 KB888113 KB888302
KB890859 KB891781 KB892944 KB893086 KB896727

That is a problem that was fixed in XP SP2.
Does the machine have SP2 installed.
I had the same problem and SP2 really did fix it.

Thanks for the tip about SP2.

Unfortuantely, the same bug that causes CHKDSK to fail also causes failures
in Partition Magic, which uses the same funny mode to backup the system
partition. I wanted to have a complete backup before upgrading to SP2,
since it once failed.

I installed SP2 anyway and it now appears to be successful. CHKDSK and
Partition Magic are now working again.
