chmod is a Unix command. There is no command in Vista at all. In DOS the
equivalent command is attrib. Right click on what?
I haven't used FTP in years. Haven't needed it.

If you were to do some web site development, you might very well have
need of FTP - in one guise or another.

I'm not doing web site design. I do not need FTP. I have no idea what the OP
is doing.

The first part of your post makes no sense. You can change attributes with
attrib or by right-clicking on the file. Unless you're really thinking of
chown, in which case you can take ownership. Clarification of what you're
trying to accomplish will get you more focused help.

Filezilla is a good free FTP program. You can also use wget for Windows.
Google around.

What are you trying to change, and to what?

What's "recommended" depends on your tastes and requirements.

I use both Bulletproof FTP, because of its 'monitor directory' feature, and
Filezilla on Vista. They both work very well.

CoreFTP Lite is a good, free, FTP program also. Works just fine in XP
and Vista

No problem - simply trying to explain why someone might need it. Your
reply gave the tone that you thought it was totally outdated and not
needed by anyone.

Since you appear to be more used to unix, I highly recommend
cygwin. www.cygwin.com. Almost perfect unix shell environment in windows.
Including ftp and chmod :-)
