Author C. Clarke. He wrote "2001: A Space Odyssey"
it starred a mad mainframe computer named "H.A.L" I forgot what that stood
for.
The computer killed the ship's crew while they were investigating Mars. Read
the book.
Or get the movie. Great special effects and writing. Fits today as well as
1968.

He was not only a science fiction writer, he was a darm genious

he said, "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from
magic"

with vista it looks like crap not magic.

one of his biggest contributions was that he thought up a way to put
sattelites into geosynchronous orbit, and he worked with the scientists and
nasa to bring that idea into reality. Most of todays satelites are in that
kind of orbit...

he also has thought of what is called the space elevator that is feasable
theoretically and can be done only when nanotechnology evolves enough to
make very strong and light materials

IIRC, those letters don't form an acronym in the movie. They are a
cultural reference, with a slight twist for legal reasons.

The letter H, A, and L are each one letter off from I B M.
