Class not registered exception when launching Windows Explorer (Vi

Hello,

I need some help. For the last couple of days I am suddenly getting the
"class not registered" exception when I am trying to do any of the following:

1. use hotkey windows+E to launch explorer

2. right click on desktop and click on "personalise"

3. click on "computer" from start menu

What needs to be registered here? I have tried "Regsvr32.exe explorer.exe"
in start>run, but this ofcourse doesnt work. I have even tried system
restore. Please help.

It sometimes helps if we have the full error. "Class not registered" often
points to something specific in the message. If not, state that as well.

This problem used to be associated with not having an up to date version of
Sun Java and it could apply to Explorer as well as IE since the two are more
or less integrated. If you have Java installed, I'd check to make sure it's
the latest version. If it is, you might need to reinstall it.

If the above doesn't help, assuming there is no more information in the
error message or even if there is, you might find additional information in
Event Viewer, located under Administrative Tools in Control Panel.

Hello Michael,

Thanks for your reply. I just tried installing the latest JRE - problem not
resolved.

Unfortunately, the "class not registered" error popup is not giving any
further information. Only that 1 line in the popup. This is happening when I
am doing any of these:
1. window+E hotkey
2. click on "computer" from start menu
3. click on "network" from start menu
4. click on "games" from start menu
5. when i click on "pictures" or "music" from start menu, I get 2 lines ->
path of pictures folder (c:\windows\user\indrajit\pictures) and then class
not registered in the second line
6. when i click on "search" from start menu, i get a different error message
-> "Windows cannot find 'search-ms:'. Make sure you typed the name correctly,
and then try again."
7. when i right click on desktop and choose "personalise", i get 2 lines in
the error popup:
"::{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}\::{ED834ED6-4B5A-4BFE-8F11-A6262DCB6A921}"
and then class not registered on the second line. The first looks like the
last part of a registry address.
Any idea?

You're welcome, Indrajit C.

Is this a recent issue, in other words, were you ever able to perform these
functions or have you always had this problem.

If a recent issue, can you think of anything you might have installed or
uninstalled? Are you using any system cleanup utilities? Have you scanned
for viruses and malware?

Hi Michael,

This is a recent issue. It started happening since last 4-5 days. It was
fine before. In recent days I only installed Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional,
Opeoffice 2, and Google Notebook Plugin for Internet Explorer, and Powerplugs
Templates for Powerpoint. I have uninstalled Openoffice - but that didnt
change anything. In terms of using any utility, I have used Vista Manager and
Registry Mechanic to get this error fixed - with no avail.

I have tried a system resore, but that didnt change anything either. There
must be a way to fix the registry - to find out missing class registrations -
any idea? I dont even have a Windows Vista DVD - if I manager to get one,
does it have any kind of "analyse and fix" utility?

The Vista disk has a startup repair function and with it you can also
reinstall Vista over itself but I wouldn't go that route yet.

You do have another repair option, type sfc /scannow into the search or run
box on the Start menu and press enter (Note the space between sfc and the
forward slash). You can find out more about this option at the following
site:
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html We used this option in XP and it
is also available in Vista.

If the above fails, in my view, the next step would be to start to remove
things, one by one, testing after each one to see if the problem is
resolved. You were headed in that direction by already having removed some
things. Continuing with the items you most recently installed, I'd
continue.

Hi Michael,

I have tried sfc /scannow - it showed no errors. I have done a complete
system scan for virus/malware/spyware using 2 softwares - nothing. Done
registry error scan using 2 softwares - nothing. I have tried uninstalling
the most recently installed softwares as well - no change in the behaviour of
the error.

I have noticed one interesting thing - the error DOES NOT OCCUR in safe mode.

This must mean that the error probably is not with the core functionality of
Explorer.EXE... but has to do with some add-on functionality that does not
take place while running the OS in safe mode. Does this give any clue to you?
How can we check what is the different between the execution steps of the
windows+E hotkey between safe mode and normal mode?

You've given me an idea. Internet Explorer and Explorer.exe are essentially
the same application. It's possible the source of this issue is some
browser add-on. Open Control Panel, open Internet Options, go to the
Programs tab, click the Manage Add-ons button, select one add-on, disable
it, click apply and ok, then check to see if you still have the issue. Do
this one by one to see if any of those add-ons are the source of this issue.

If this doesn't work or find the source of the issue, given that you already
tried to re-register as stated in your original post, I'd say we might be
looking at a reinstall of Vista. It can be installed over itself but if
that doesn't work, you'd be looking at a clean install. In either case, be
sure your data is well backed up.
