Is there a way of getting a clasic login box with a drop down domain / local
PC list.
I think having to type localPC\localuser is NOT an improvement.

You could try editing the local policy. Run gpedit.msc as an administrator.
You'll find the setting under Computer Configuration - Administrative
Templates - System - Logon - Always use classic logon

I can't try it as this machine is joined to a domain so I always get the
classic logon. Note the classic logon looks a little different so it's not
so classic but it does have all the options.

Actually I just tried logging on to this machine again. It is a little
different from a non-domain logon but it doesn't have the options from the
classic logon. You have to specify the domain or local machine as in
domain/user or local_machine/user instead of picking the domain or local
machine from a drop down list.

"localPC"? try using .\localuser (still not an improvement, but at least it's
quicker to type than "localPC")

On machines joined toa domain you can also enter the longin credential as the
e-mail address instead of domain/user. This has worked since Windows 2000.
The domain drop down was great when there were just a few domains. It was a
nightmare for sites with 15+ domains in a forest. It could take a really,
really long time to populate that list if you accidentally clicked the drop
down to choose your domain instead of just using domain/username.
