Clean Install from Upgrade CD

trying to do a clean install on a HP a405n system.
I have a Windows Vista Home Premium DVD.
When I try to boot to do a clean install it asks for the cd for the Windows
xp version to authenticate the install.
Since the back up cd's for the original system is 18 cd's this not possible.
also the original install software is on drive D.
How can I satisfy this requirement???
If I do a upgrade to the xp system is is very slow in performance. HP will
not help because the system was sold with xp and they do not support upgrades
to it. I have other upgrades on a Toshiba laptop and a test pc and they
perform great.
Any suggestions on how to satisfy this???
Larry.

Borrow an old XP installation disk from your neighbor/friend?

Rich;
Thank you for the response. In the past when I use to re install xp I would
use an old ME version and it would work. Have not tried that as yet. Not sure
if any of my neighbors have a xp full version but will ask around. most have
systems that came on their pc's as a pkg.

1. Boot with the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD.
2. Click "Install Now".
3. Do not enter a Product Key when prompted.
4. When prompted, select the Vista product edition that you do have.
5. Install Vista normally.
6. Once the install is complete, restart the DVD-based Setup from
within Windows Vista. Perform an in-place upgrade.
7. Enter your Product Key when prompted.

Hi Larry,

If you refer to my post 'Clean Install Windows Vista Using Upgrade Media' in
the newsgroup 'Windows Vista Installation and Setup', you should be able to
solve your problem. I enclose a direct link to this post below.

You'll need a "Full Version" of Windows Vista
if you wish to perform a "clean install" on a blank
hard drive. You cannot use an upgrade disc since
it is only for actually upgrading over a Windows
XP installation. And you cannot "borrow" a
Windows XP disc.

Hi Carey Frisch,

You need to own a legal copy of the appropriate version of XP to
qualify for the corresponding Upgrade version of Vista.

See: 'Windows Vista: Upgrade Paths from Previous Versions'

However, you can do a clean install of a Upgrade version of Vista quite
easily using the method in this tutorial. This is legal and meets Vista
EULA requirements if you also own a appropriate legal copy of XP for the
Updrage version of Vista.

That's not correct. I have the upgrade package and Installed a new hard
drive using the upgrade disc. Vista never asked me for the XP disc or
anything.
