Although this issue originates with updates, the question relates to a system
problem.

I have had problems with windows updates and can't install some prerequisite
updates (937287) for SP 1 and newer. I don't know why, but I troubleshot this
issue for a while about a year ago and then forgot about it.

Now some newer updates are available that I can't install (IE8). The machine
seems to work ok, but it has been recommended I do a format and
do a clean install of vista.

I would appreciate some basic information and guidelines so I can get
started on this, as it seems like a learning curve. I know first I have to
back up my data, but beyond that how to go about it....?

Would appreciate help on this....

Depending on where you baught your computer from, installation can range
from really simple to complicated.
Some vendors provide DVD's to enable restore of your computer to factory
defaults. Basically, you only need to boot from the first DVD and follow the
prompts. The system would then erase the contents of your disk and reinstall
OS, drivers and apps as it was when you purchased your computer.

Some vendors don't do that and you have to do reinstallation yourself.
You need to make ready:
OS media
Drivers
Applications you intend to use.
All the necessary licenses.

Don't forget support for other equipment that you use with your PC:
Scanners
Cameras
Printers
Mobile Phones
etc

If you don't have one, you will have to borrow one from a friend.

If your computer came with "recovery" media, boot to that and use it.

If you don't have that, then you might have a recovery partition with
the necessary files. Consult your computer manual, or the
manufacturer's website.
