Why did the new version not over-write the previous version, or provide an
UNINSTALL OLD VERSION option?

I cannot find the uninstal for my previous version and do not want to just
delete the folder because that will eave detritus.

Greetings,

Messenger will upgrade any other product in its product family.

I assume what you're referring to is Windows Live Messenger not upgrading Windows Messenger.
Windows Messenger is a part of Windows XP and not part of the Windows Live Messenger product
family. Since they're separate products, you then have both and both are required to be
installed for all functionality to work in Windows Live Messenger.

If you don't mind Windows Live Messenger not having Remote Assistance, Whiteboard or
Application Sharing features then you can manually uninstall Windows Messenger on your own.
To do so, click Start again, then Run and copy/paste the following:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, check

Mr Kay,

I understand what you wrote but I still do not see why installing the new
one should not have at least suppressed the automatic opening and signing in
of the older. At first I had one sign in and then the other signed in over
it, closing the first.

In my pre-retirement post as a Software Quality Assurance Manager I would
have written your department up for a serious failure in that you upset a,
and possibly some, users.

Hi,

I don't work for Microsoft, I just support their products -- trust me, this isn't how I
would've done it either.

It's "fixed" now though -- they've killed Windows Messenger off entirely in Vista.
