when i hover over the custom install link, i see shortcut to
javascriptarent.FnScan();. when i click on the link, i get the sound but
nothing happens, no popup, no errors, etc.the site shows "trusted". i've
reinstalled SP2 for XP but with no success. the same thing happens for
express install. this only happens to one of my computers. what next?

Check your security level for that zone.
I can reproduce your symptom by setting the slider to High
(which disables Active Scripting among other necessary things
for that site). Try clicking on the Default Level... button which
sets the slider to Low and thus re-enables those features.

That could be a problem. FWIW I have frequently had problems
mysteriously clear up by deleting the site name from Trusted Sites
and then just letting them get Default level security in the Internet zone.

i changed the setting to Default Level (for Trusted sites) and still have the same problem. i've turned off all security software.
