I click Custom, Try To Click Software or Hardware, it Re-Loads

im on a dell Inspiron 5100 Windows XP Pro SP2, Everytime i go to the windows
update site, i click custom to download the Software and Hardware updates,
however when i click on ethier one of them it always just re-loads the
windows update site into the smaller frame and then eventually just freezes
up - any help please?
