when I click on Internet Explorer icon I am hijacked to Windows Up

My selected IE homepage is google. But for the last week or so, when I click
on the Internet explorer icon on the desktop, I am hijacked to the Windows
Update page. I have run several spyware programs, but they don't find
anything causing this. Google still shows up under options as the homepage.

I tried unchecking the "Automatically check for IE updates" box, and hit the
"Apply" button, but I still get automatically redirected to the Windows
update page, whenever I click the IE icon either on the Desktop, or on the
small icons at the bottom of the screen. I tried rebooting, thinking that
might be needed for the change to take effect--still no joy.

Yes, as I mentioned at the end of the last message, I rebooted, and still no
joy.

And you're certain this started before MS05-038 (Cumulative Security Update
for Internet Explorer 896727) was released today?

We're beginning to see a few other posts in other newsgroups about this same
behavior. To help fix this apparent bug:

- Please state your Windows version.

- Does installing MS05-038 fix the problem (check in at Windows Update)?

- Are you getting critical updates via Windows Update (WU) or Microsoft
Update (MU)? (If 'Microsoft Update' is listed in your Start menu, you're
getting them via MU.)

Until your message, I had not installed MS05-038 (Cumulative Security Update
for Internet Explorer 896727). I have just installed it, and rebooted, but
alas, my problem remains. From your message below, I have realized one
inaccuracy in my previous description of my problem. My problem is (and has
been) that I am being hijacked to the Microsoft Update window (not the
Windows Update window, as I previously stated).

I don't remember exactly when this started, but it has been going on for at
least a few days prior to today. It started happening shortly after I
installed the beta test version of the Microsoft Anti-Spyware program
(whatever it is called). I tried uninstalling the beta, and my memory is
that the first time afterwards that I hit the IE icon, I got Google, and
cheered. But the problem immediately returned, so I concluded that the MS
beta was probably not the problem.

On your last question: I have been getting critical updates via Microsoft
Update for at least a couple of weeks, maybe it's been a couple of
months--can't remember exactly.

Thanks for your continued efforts to solve this!!

If WinXP:

- Is SP2 installed?

- Is Automatic Updates enabled and working properly as far as you know?

The fact that opening an IE window takes you to MU instead of WU is
inconsequential.

Did MS Windows AntiSpyware Beta (MWAS) find any spyware? Did you have MWAS
"fix" or quarantine it/them? Did you "undo" these fixes/quarantines before
uninstalling MWAS?

Is Spybot S&D or any other anti-malware tool also installed?

System Information says I am running Windows XP Professional, Version
5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600.

I installed SP2 as soon as it came out.

As far as I know, automatic updates has been enabled and working properly,
except when I implemented your early suggestion to turn off the automatic
updates for Internet Explorer. (I have automatic updates scheduled daily at
9 PM, so that might explain why the critical updates from today hadn't been
installed yet?)

Whn Microsoft Update pops up (as it now does all the time), it always gives
me the green check, saying that "Automatic updates: turned ON."
