When I pull up a Web page and click on a link within that Web site, the
computer shuts Internet Explorer down and goes to the Desktop. This does not
happen in all cases.

How does your problem pertain to Windows Update?

Really Bear, IE is part of the mystery OS that the OP is using and there have
been some updates recently, which one of the updates must have been for IE
thus causing the problem where the link on a website goes to the desktop.

The OP has already scanned his computer for viruses and malware etc and made
sure that there are no nasty add ons with IE so therefore it must have been
an undate.

Crystall ball short -circuiting.
