What setting (and where) do I need to apply so that workstations can recieve
updates from WSUS.
These settings need to be applied via Group Policy

You need to review the WSUS Deployment Guide and WSUS Operations Guide for
this information.

When Windows firewll is enabled on XP, what exceptions do I need to state, to
allow the workstation to get its updates from the WSUS server.

This appears to be the only difference why this computer is not getting any
updates applied

Thanks

NONE.

All communications relevant to Windows Update, Microsoft Update, or a WSUS
environment are *outbound* from the Windows Update Agent on the client
computer. Because the Windows XP firewall does not provide for egress
filtering, there is no filtering to enable/disable.

Perhaps you could share some *actual* log entries, and we can evaluate
what's actually happening.

Your original question was relevant to how to apply settings to the WUA, and
then we've taken a leap into a belief that the firewall is blocking access
(which it cannot). We need to back up a bit and make sure, first, that
you've actually got these settings configured correctly and applied -- which
is a thousands times more likely to be the cause for failures than a
firewall.

Thank you for taking the time to help me resolve this issue. I do appreciate
it.

I must confess, that as I was collecting numerous information to post, I
noticed that one of the group policy objects (that I have inherited), had
deny windows updates.

Once I set this to not configured (and the other hacks that numerous posts
suggested), it now appears to be working.
