We are having a problem with Window Live Messenger crashing. It appears to
happen when the shared folder is being used. The Windows error analysis
call out CLKDRV as the problem and recommends the applications removal.
When I do a search CLKDRV is not found. I see on the web that this has been
seen quite a bit. I am assuming that a update or something? Please help.

XP PRO Version 2002 Service Pack 3
Windows Live Messenger Version 8.1.178.0

Thank You in advance for any help.
- John

Greetings,

You mean clkdvr(.sys) right? The Sharing Folders in Messenger work by utilizing a feature
of the NTFS file system called the USN Journal, which basically tracks changes to files made
on the disk. As such, anything interfering with that at the driver level may cause the
system to crash.

I haven't had much luck with people providing any real information about the file itself (who
owns it, and where it came from, etc.), so if you wouldn't mind hunting down the file (should
be in \windows\ somewhere) and looking at its properties, that would be great.

You could try upgrading to 8.5, but to the best of my knowledge, this does not fix the
problem. Downgrading to 7.0 or upgrading to the latest 2009 release will fix your problem as
they didn't nor currently have this sharing folder feature. Alternatively you could just
switch the feature off, although it sounds like you actually use it.

First, thank you for you reply.

My son is the one doing all the messaging. This seems to happen when some
girl tries to put pictures in the shared folder. I have several searches
for clkd and nothing shows up. This seems to be consistent with what some
other people are saying. I guess we will try the upgrade route.

If there is somewhere you want me to look or something to try let me know.

John

Hi,

Well, if you're searching using the built-in XP search, make sure you've selected 'Search
system folders' under More advanced options as it won't be selected by default.

I have to admit I'm not considering this a very active issue, since the feature has since
been cut and the problem solved that way.
