I'm not sure this is the right place to post this. If not, please excuse me and
re-direct me.
I have a Win XP Pro system with 20G drives. I would like to clone the system drive
onto a larger HD, with TrueImage. I really don't want to do a new install, due to
a large number of installed programs.
Is this going to cause a re-activation of XP? Are there any traps I need to avoid?
Thanks,
MikeR

Of course you'll have to reactivate.

How to activate Windows XP

I have changed both my hard drives in a Windows XP installation and no
re-activation was needed. When changing the system drive I used it as an
opportunity to test the effectiveness of Acronis true image. I took an up to
date image of the drive to the slave drive and then removed the system drive
pretending it had failed. then I installed the new larger drive, correctly
jumpered, and restored the from the system image to it with no other
preparation.

You will have to boot into the restoration process from the Acronis recovery
disk and then just follow the various prompts including expanding to fill
the new drive if that is what you want to do. I have never used the clone
process as I could not see the point and particularly as I wanted to
simulate recovery from an assumed HDD failure. If you run into any problems
remember that you have your original drive sitting safely on a shelf and
also you could, if you make some wrong option choices, run the restoration
again with no loss of data.

Richard.

I have used Norton Ghost to clone the system drive to a larger, new drive without having to
re-activate. I was also quite pleased when every installed program worked perfectly.
If you use Norton Ghost, make sure you select NOT to mark the drives...

Thanks guys!
I had Googled the subject, and found all sorts of pitfalls, and conflicting ideas
on why XP was a "special" deal. Acronis seems a lot easier to use than Ghost. I'm
just gonna put the new drive in place of one of the CD's, and clone directly to it.
