Suggestion; Use the close button of Window update only for closing a window,
not for restarting the computer.

Just had a nasty experience with the Windows Vista Update. Windows Update
wanted to install a 'critical update' (for an iPod, which I don't use), so I
let it. In the mean time I worked on. When it was done, it popped up a window
over the window I was working in, saying it was done and needed a restart.
There was a big 'Restart' button in the middle of that window. I was in the
middle of something complicated, so a restart was not what I wanted to do. I
therefore pressed the Close button in the upper right corner of the window. I
expected that this would simply close the window (see Windows Help and
Support, Windows Basics, Working with Windows). To my horror it closed
everything and restarted the computer. This while I was doing work that
cannot withstand such a sudden restart. Windows update should never do this.
A restart should only be performed when the user really wants it, that is;
presses the restart button, not when the window is closed.

936824 is not a critical update.

Suggestion #1: Use the "Don't restart now" option instead of closing the
window.

Suggestion #2: Use the Notify Only option in Automatic Updates so that no
updates, critical or otherwise, download OR install without your approval.

Hi PA Bear,

Although you suggest a few useful ways to avoid this 'restart on close
window' bug, it doesn't address the real issue I try to raise; Using the
close button should not restart the computer. I also can't remember seeing a
'don't restart now' button, but I was on the phone so I was slightly
distracted.

Now that I am familiar with this bug I can avoid it, as you suggest, but how
many more people will have to find out the hard way that 'close window'
sometimes means 'yes, I do want to restart my computer'? What if you're on
the phone to a customer, like I was, and you have to tell them you accidently
restarted your PC and ....... can they please hold? (configuring updates...
please wait...) Then you have to ask for their customers details again...
"yes, I know you've told me this before, but I have to look up your details
again. I lost everything when my computer restarted.", look everthing up
again, and retype what was lost. What impression does that make?

My remedy; I've switched off Windows update completely, and I will only
update when it doesn't matter if my computer goes down.
