How to close explorer.exe which I never opened?

*Every time I shut down Vista, in the process of closing on the black
screen, I see a message saying: The following programs are still
running:. And just below, is the name explorer.exe.*
*The message appears, even if I have meticulously closed all the
programs and there is no mention of explorer on the taskbar; stranger
still – the message appears even if I shut downVista, immediately after
opening it, for test purpose.*

*How does one get this quirky behaviour of Vista corrected? Or does
explorer.exe open on its own in Vista? And what does one do to close an
application which does not show up on the taskbar as open?*

EXPLORER.EXE is an integral part of Windows, and does indeed start
automatically when you log on, and in turn initializes such visual
elements as the taskbar itself, and the desktop.

What is causing it to stutter and interfere with the shutdown process,
is likely some type of installed extension that is crashing. This could
be just about anything, but likely suspects are such things as copy
handlers that usually intercept the standard copy/paste functions. Older
versions of Nero Scout (designed for XP) have also been known to wreak
havoc with Explorer in Vista.

Do you perchance recall installing any software prior to this error
occuring?

Explorer.Exe is Windows Shell ( What you see and work with ). Just
as Internet Explorer has Add-ons, Explorer's capabilities are expanded
by programs that add Shell Extensions. These are things like the Right
Click entries for "Scan for Viruses with..." Most times when Explorer
has issues shutting down for reboot/turn-off it's due to these extensions.

One program that helps in finding 3rd-party extensions is:

Pretty lame excuse. If Explorer is a part of Windows and is going t
remain open as long as Windows is Open as a part of the Windows Shell
why give a false signal to the User saying : "Some Program
(specifically explorer.exe) are still running"?

P. Jayant,

Please do the following:

1. Press the ctrl-alt-delete keys at the same time
2. You will see screen with a list of options with arrows on the left
3. Click the "Start Task Manager" option
4. The Windows Task Manager window will appear
5. There are six tabs at the top (Applications, Processes, Services,
Performance, etc.)
6. Select the "Processes" tab
7. Find "explorer.exe" under the column heading "Image Name"
8. Right click on "explorer.exe" and then left click on "End Process"

Now do you see why you need this process running?

Sometimes a demonstration is needed to get the point across.

P. Jayant

Maybe you should read all the posts to a thread before you make funny
remarks. EXPLORER.EXE is required by Windows, as the demonstration by
Koch will show.

EXPLORER.EXE can and will hang the shutdown process if a badly written
shell extension crashes...
