Code 41 appears wiping out drivers w/latest updates

After automatic updates were installed for WinXP & Office 7 my DVD-RW drivers
(JLMS DVD-ROM XJ-HD 166 and TEAC DVD+RW DV-W58E) were wiped out (Code 41) no
longer found. System retore brings them back, but then Code 41 returns when
re-installed. Any suggestions?
