Code 8000FFFF on Server 2008 64-bit, Can't install KB958690 & KB96

This is a new server with a fresh install of Server 2008 Standard 64-bit SP1.
Severl updates installed fine, now it's stuck with these 2 security updates
waiting to be installed. When I attempt the install, though Windows Update,
they fail with the referenced code. Have also downloaded KB958690 directly to
the desktop and it still fails to install. I've stopped the WU service,
deleted the SoftwareDistribution folder with no luck. Have removed AV program
and anything else I thought might be interfering. This is driving me nuts...
have found no good answers on the web (most info pertains to Vista). See WU

Since your log references the CBS, Vista answers may be helpful for your
case too. In any case I suspect you will have better clues in the CBS.log
than in the WU summary.

You should probably check out that possible missing module srclient.dll too.
However, I would wonder if it is a real module or just a generic message about
some unspecified missing module. Hopefully the other log would clarify that too.
Otherwise you could Run... ProcMon to capture other registry and file accesses
which are associated with all log messages for supplementary clues.
Obviously it would help to have access to other logs from otherwise identical
machines which have installed the same update successfully.
