I am trying install the update for Windows Vista KB929777.

Unfortunately I consistently get the error message:

Code 8000FFFF.

I have no idea how to correct this. Any ideas?

Daniel

Hello everyone - I can definitely add a resounding YES to this issue - my
poor brand new DELL has been trying to download this update since I got the
new machine in January - thus, it has failed on numerous attempts, with the
same error codes. I am going to look into the attempts to fix it as I've
been reading on this post for a while now, and thanks for the comedy
'MOWGREEN' - the Apple comment was priceless!

But seriously, if anyone discovers if this da-- update is truly essential,
and/or it isn't, I will have it hidden, as this is pretty baffling...thanks.

Hi

I have the same problem and it's driving me crazy. I have tried both Dell
support and Microsoft support and I am getting nowhere other than having to
take my new laptop back to a factory image which means having to back up
everything and install all software again apart what came from the factory.
This is nuts. If anyone has an answer or how we can escalate this it would
be appreciated.

The post you are responding to is no longer available (on Microsoft's NNTP
servers, anyway) so I can't tell what update you are talking about. If you'll
provide more information, someone may have an answer for you.

* Which update?
* What operating system and service pack level?
* What goes wrong?

Harry.

<lol> I've still got it. Did you try to build a news link from a References header?

References: <3158E8C7-B5A2-4D16-9B78-> <16B33E99-6FC2-42B2-AEA5->
<46E827B4-E2F6-46D8-BB43->

So that would be

news:3158E8C7-B5A2-4D16-9B78-

Yup. Still there:

Be truthful and tell them you have better ways to spend your time
than digging up two month old posts (which are soon to be aged
off our server--in less than a week I'd say.) <eg>

I did email Microsoft, here is what they said...by the way, it did NOT work.
When I attempted to contact them again (like he said to) they claim they have
mail server problems and cannot get my emails.....such a crock!

From the case log, I understand that the Update for Windows Vista (KB943302)
and (KB938371) cannot be installed successfully with error code 8000FFFF. If
there has been any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.

I also understand the inconvenience you have experienced. Please be assured
that I will do my best to help you. This issue can be caused by one of the
following factors:

1. Corrupted Windows Update Temporary folder
2. Some registry keys are corrupt.

We will address some of the more common causes of this issue. It is
important that we attempt to connect to the Windows Update web site after
each step to confirm whether the resolution has worked. This will prevent us
from having to proceed with additional troubleshooting steps and provide us
with valuable feedback to further develop our support resolutions for you and
our future customers. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

NOTE: Some third party programs can also affect the Windows Update service.
If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet
or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet
connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I
recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing the
Windows Update site later. Please be sure to re-enable them after completing
the update process.

Suggestion 1: Rename the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder
================================================== ===
This problem may occur if the Windows Update, Software distribution folder
has been corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this
folder. Please note that the folder will be re-created the next time we visit
the Windows Update site.

1. Close all the open windows.
2. Click the "Start" Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
3. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator".
4. In "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in "net stop WuAuServ"
(without the quotes) and press Enter.

Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was
successfully stopped before we try to rename the folder. However, if it
failed, please let me know before performing any further steps and include
any error messages you may have received when it failed.

5. Click the "Start" Button, in the "Start Search" box, type in "%windir%"
(without the quotes) and press Enter.
6. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".
7. Right-click on the folder, select "Rename" and type "SDold" (without the
quotes) to rename this folder.
8. Still in "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type the command "net
start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the
Windows Updates service.

Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was
successfully started. However, if it failed, please let me know before
performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have
received when it failed.

Let’s now try Windows Update again and see if the issue has been resolved.
Please let us know if this step has resolved it. If it has not, please
proceed to the next step.

Suggestion 2: Remove the incorrect COMPONENTS key
=========================================
Before we go any further, let's backup the registry key first.

1. Click "Start", type REGEDIT in the Start Search bar and press Enter.
2. Select "My Computer" (the root node) on the left pane, under the "File"
menu, click "Export", under Export, choose "All Export" range, and select
"Desktop" in the Save in box and type "backup" as the File Name. Click "Save".

Please Note: If any unexpected issue happens, we can restore the registry
key simply by double-clicking the backup.reg file.

3. Still in "Registry Editor", locate the following Registry batches by
clicking the PLUS (+) sign

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS

4. Check if these three values exist under the COMPONENTS key:

PendingXmlIdentifier
NextQueueEntryIndex
AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving

5. If so, delete them.
6. Quit "Registry Editor".

After completing the above steps, please restart the computer and try to run
Windows Update again. If it persists, please help me gather the following
information:

Collect the relevant registry key
========================
1. Click "Start", type REGEDIT in the Start Search bar and press Enter.
2. Locate the following Registry batches by clicking the PLUS (+) sign

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Components

3. Please click "Components" on the left pane, right click on the branch
name Components and choose "Export".
4. Save the branch on the Desktop with the name Components.
5. Go back to the Desktop, right-click the saved file, click "Send To", and
click "Compressed (zipped) Folder".
6. A new file (compressed file) will be generated. Please send it to me at:
v-.

You receive error code 8000FFFF when you click "Check for Updates" in the
Windows Update Control Panel item on a Windows Vista-based computer:

Did you read my post above? You have duplicated my help email from Microsoft,
therefore the link you sent is of no help. Further, many of the posts above
list your advice as well. Does anyone have any NEW information?
This is very frustrating!
