Code 8024A000 Windows Update Encountered an unknown error

I have Vista Home Premium already installed on a computer I bought. Windows
update was working fine and now when I check for new updates, I get the error
message above in the subject and when I try again, it keeps happening. I
searched this error code and found some posts, from 2005. I tried some of the
recommended solutions, but this doesn't fix it. Any solutions available for
2009?

Error messages that you may receive when you try to download and install
updates from the Windows Update Web site, from the Microsoft Update Web
site, or from a WSUS server: "0x800704DD," "0x80240020," or both:

However, there's a very good chance are that you are seeing the affects of a
hijackware infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:

2. Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!) in Safe
Mode with Networking, if need be:

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.
