For the first time in a while, I tried to play a song that I recorded in my
WMP and got the error message about a missing Codec. I had always been able
to play
this sone without problems. I have found a lot of information about Codecs
on Microsoft sites, but am confused. They say I should beware of some Codecs
that
I might download from non-Microsoft sources. Where do I start? Is this
something that an intermediate computer knowlege user like myself can handle?

Thanks

Thanks for your continued help. You have helped me in the past with Win OE
issues. I tried to uninstall WMP11 in Control Panel, but first thing that
popped up was an offer to rollback WMP to previous version. I tried this but
roll back did
not work and I am still with WMP11 on my system. In Control Panel, I could
not get to an option for full removal. I want to take you up on your
suggestion to remove and reinstall, using the link you gave me.

I see in my Control Panel population a WMP runtime - is this where all of my
music is stored, and if so, should I try to remove this first?

Thanks again.

Here is some more information about my issue.

In the last few hours, I have transferred music from a cd onto WMP. Now, I
can go into WMP and this music works fine. It is the music (more than 100
songs) that
I ripped onto WMP from cd's a few years ago that I now unabe to play. All of
these bring up the missing codec screen. I think that I was running WMP 10
when I put the "bad" music on WMP and now I am running version 11. Don't
know if
this has anything to do with the problem.

As I stated, I am not able to uninstall WMP 11 at this point.

Open Add/Remove Programs. On the left side of the screen click on Windows
Features. On the drop down list you should see something related to Windows
Media or Media Player. Uncheck it and select ok. Reboot then head to
Microsoft and re-install Media Player.

Still can't un-install WMP11.

In Control Panel, I see at the left four options: I chose Add or Remove
Windows
Components. I selected this, in Windows Comonents Wizard screen, I arrowed
down and found WMP. I un-checked this and selected Next. Now, in
Configuring Components screen, then Windows Components Wizard - You have
successfullu
completed the Windows Components Wizard, and I clicked Finish.

I did a full re-boot -

The WMP shortcut is gone from my desktop but WMP 11 is still in Control
panel listing.
??????????????

Go here and re-download it and see if it will install.

Not to be a pr!ck, but have you been screwing around with any Windows
components, tried to "streamline" or have you recently run a "registry
cleaner"?

No - I would not know how to do the stuff you mention. I am computer
literate enough to know that I should not go within five miles of the
registry.

When I used the link you gave me, I cleared two security warnings, and then
got into a Windows Media Player Download screen, and when I clicked on
Download Now, I get the famous "this page cannot be displayed" screen.

I wish I could get WMP off my computer so that I can re-install.

Thanks for your continued help.

I think your problems may run deeper than your WMP issues. Download and run
http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and see if anything ugly turns up. Other than
that
I'm out of ideas. Sorry.

You shouldn't need to, since the player level just builds off of the
format SDK for this.

When you click the error dialog's Web Help button, what *URL* does it
take you to?
