What is COM Surrogate?

I have been trying to find a video converter program that i am happ
with and have downloaded several trials. Everytime i hit browse to fin
the video in the programs when it opens my movie folder i get th
message "COM Surrogate has stopped working windows is checking for
solution." Then it says after a few seconds of searching "a problem ha
caused the program to stop working correctly. windows will close th
program and notify you if a solution is available." I hit close progra
and nothing happens. No program closes that i have active. And it wil
do this over and over. Im a little afraid that when i do find a progra
i like that this may cause problems with converting my movies fully

In this case COM surrogate is what's generating the preview icons for your
thumbnails shown in Explorer, the decoder its using isn't compatible and is
causing the program to crash. This would of been installed by one of the
trial applications.

Is there a way to fix this? this happens with several programs. Is thi
something to worry about or is it not such a big deal and something
will just have to deal with

Uninstalling the application responsible should fix this.

Depending on what sort of videos you're re-encoding, there may be other
solutions out there that don't cause such issues. If you're converting
things into WMV, the built in Movie Maker can do it, if you need something a
bit more advanced there's Windows Media Encoder.

What are the fault details for that specific crash according to the Problem
Reports and Solutions control panel under View Problem History?

'nevideo.ax' may be suspect here, since you're not getting a "how to fix"
response back.
