Sorry to add more ... but really by now it seems to have pervaded everything
because it seems like I have tried everything. Of all of the files to re-register .. the one I am having the most trouble with is mshmtl.dll (I think that is it). So upon searching I come up with the Internet Explorer security update that just released in Feb 2009 and is called "Microsoft Security Bulletin MS09-002 - Critical Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (961260)" I would love to just at least install that update but there is no place for me to find that particular download and of course when I go to Windows automatic update ... the same old thing happens again. There's a very good chance are that you're seeing the affects of a
hijackware infection. 1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually: http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx 2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be): http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm 3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested logs in an appropriate forum, not here. oh great .. thank you so much for replying ... I have been going thru so many
of these .. so that yesterday I ran the malicious software tool completely (took quite a while so I think it worked) and it came up with nothing ... I am going to go thru your whole list .. I just wanted to add in ... and I am sorry but I have been working at this somewhat desperately lately ... I just about feel like giving up and I am working hard at TRYING EVERYTHING that I see recommended. So what I did is notice that at least I could update Internet Explorer 7 back to a new 8 release 1 that WORKS WITH SP3 already installed ... hoping that mshtml.dll would update (I told you it seemed corrupted because it was not re-registering of all of the *.dll's listed in the various lists that are supposed to be registered. Anyway so IE 8 is now installed and working. Live Messenger is working and at the latest version .... Windows Live Mail moves quite slowly and I just have not gone back to MSN Mail in my MSN Explorer even though I am paying for it. It froze everything. So now it seems to be only Hotmail is working with some efficiency .... I have plenty of memory .. plenty of space ... Have been running my virus scans all of this time thru the last 3 months and never came up with anything. My spybot program is installed at the latest but when the computer started freezing so much after the SP3 download .. I thought why do I have to run Norton 360 AS WELL as spybot and adaware. (I had both installed and was a paying subscriber to Lavasoft which eventually just confused me so much that I uninstalled .. or tried to.) I will surely be at a loss to find that this is all a result of spyware, walware when I spend what is plenty at Norton and how much more of spy software now do I have to install with Norton in order to stop glitches like this. Finally even though I prefer Spybot so much more to Norton and have so much trouble working with Norton for years and years ... SpyBot does not have virus ware and isn't it finally just easier to have one software maker of your spyware and virus ware? Anyway I will now proceed to go to the rest of your steps ... which looks like it is a haystack hunt once more for stuff that I have trouble running. I have hijack this and autorun and so many of those programs installed that were supposed to be easy and help me get rid of spyware .. and none of them are easy .. none of them point out that THEY HAVE FOUND A REASON WHY WINDOWS UPDATE IS NOT WORKING .... none of this is easy. Is this some secret incentive to get us to go to this new Windows operating system ... or to switch to macintosh where spyware and virus ware does not knock out our computer for months at a time? Sorry .. just a bit despaired. "sbc" wrote: > Sorry to add more ... but really by now it seems to have pervaded everything > because it seems like I have tried everything. BUT I did go to my computer guy .. bought as much memory possible and
installed it successfully! Windows XP SP3 Intel Pentium 4 Windows XPVersion: 5.01.2600 Service Pack 3 BIOS: AT/AT COMPATIBLE, 03/07/05 Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00 GHz Memory: 2030.73 MB Did increase my Verizon broadband to the highest. My dillemma now is I am without a car and don't have the option to take my computer on the bus ... well actually I could ... BUT this Windows Update problem came with the SP3 download and I should think that some technician (not you perhaps but you don't realize how thankful I am for your reply) SHOULD BE ABLE TO LOOK AT THE PLAIN FACTS STATED IN THE WINDOWS UPDATE LOG AND DECIPHER WHAT THEY MEAN!!! Forgive me but why in heavens name are our computers given these logs if the Windows Update team can not decipher them. Your advice to me was somewhat typical of quite a few posts and I am not begrudging it but once again I am asking you what does it mean now that once again my Windows Update log is saying this: COMAPI FATAL: Unable to connect to the service (hr=80080005) I will try and do all of the more and more scans and spyware hunting .. but I have that software .. I have Norton ... scans all come up nil. Couldn't you just possibly address what the above is saying????? "sbc" wrote: > oh great .. thank you so much for replying ... Why are you replying to yourself?
You've got enough problems. I wouldn't add to them by installing beta software (i.e., IE8 RC1)! Was Norton 360 running in the background and was Spybot's Tea Timer and/or Ad-Aware's Guard and/or Ad-Watch services enabled when you installed WinXP SP3? ...IE8 RC1? sbc wrote: > oh great .. thank you so much for replying ... Well, I'm not the Windows Update team, but I can tell you this is an access denied error. This suggests that access to the Windows Update Agent has been deliberately blocked, probably by malware, although there might be some other root cause. If you're looking for new anti-virus software, by the way, I personally recommend Avast! which is free for non-commercial home use. Harry. Feb 22, 2009 the first time that Windows Update decided to work ...in 3
months!!!! It's not great .. it's moving much slower than what my computer has been moving at with the new memory I installed and the speeded up DSL. You're funny .. yes you are right .. enough problem but at least now I have Internet Explorer 8 running fast ... and this horrible MSN explorer whenever I open the window freezes almost everything .. BUT sure enough ... Windows Update is NOW configuring or showing up .. or whatever you want to say it is doing ... in both browsers!!!! It started up at first only, well here is what I wrote ... it's not working totally yet but I can tell you I did everything and to run the OneCare scan and YES I got it installed too, only to get an error message that is 2 years old on that site and my next steps were going to have to be about uninstalling Windows and all of this stuff that I just can not deal with ... Okay so this is what happened to make it work ... but I need to know if these services are necessary for me to keep running in order to get this to install ... they are the 2 services with .NET in their name ... I started them ... well now they are running .. but they were not running when Windows Update started to work ... it was some other services I started .. It started thru Internet Explorer ... and I only have Windows Live Messenger running .. I don't have MSN Explorer running or MSN or Windows Live Mail or any of that. It is downloading very slowly 248 MB of Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86 (update 1 of 1) . . . This changed mostly I think because of me going thru services and starting some of them but they were not BITS or Windows Update ... rather they were other ones. The computer is moving very slowly .. meaning my online browsing and this download seem to be happening at a much slower pace than what I have recently upgraded my Verizon DSL to. I am grateful for Windows Update working but do I even use .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 .... I have .NET Framework 1 and 2 installed and all of these take so much room. The other thing I notice is that Norton 360 scanstub.exe is not starting .. I can not get the Norton 360 window to come up so that I could tell it to fix the one setting. This is the FIRST time that Norton 360 will not open and coincidentally the first time in 3 months that Windows update is working. If Norton 360 is going to continue to burden my Windows Update and it is not a good program to work with Windows Update, then I need to know whether Microsoft recommends switching to this OneCare program. I ended up starting a few more services and is that what could be making the computer now work so slow .. download so slow? And if so what did I do in services that possibly all of a sudden asked Windows Update to work. There were 2 .NET services in my services area that I think I tried starting and then stopping. Won't downloading this 248 MB of Microsoft .NET Framework clog my computer but at the same time why did not anyone tell me that it was instrumental in somehow instigating Windows update to start again!!!??? Yes I am SORRY I HAVE TO ADD MORE ... But at least my 2 logs reflect exactly
what is going on ... which makes me think that when they reflected the COMAPI Fatal error .. I just wish that in that 3 months .. one Microsoft tech had bothered to look at those 2 logs. It boggles my mind why we have them if they are insignificant. So here is what My Reporting Events log says: {A0B96358-37F5-4494-95AE-5692D1D651A2} 2009-02-22 14:55:21:765-0800 1 147 101 {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} 0 0 WindowsUpdate Success Software Synchronization Windows Update Client successfully detected 4 updates. AND my Windows update Log said this first: WindowsUpdate Success Software Synchronization Windows Update Client successfully detected 4 updates. BUT now it has added this ... START -- COMAPI: Install [ClientId = WindowsUpdate] Allow source prompts: Yes; Forced: No; Force quiet: No Updates in request: 1 COMAPI - ServiceID = {9482F4B4-E343-43B6-B170-9A65BC822C77} COMAPI WARNING: ISusInternal::BeginInstallUpdates3 failed, hr=80240016 COMAPI - WARNING: Exit code = 0x80240016 COMAPI -- END -- COMAPI: Install [ClientId = <NULL>] COMAPI WARNING: Failing to start installation due to error (hr=80240016) ________________________________________ But at least Windows update window works .. it shows the update ..it show it did not install and this is the first time in 3 months that it has not done that re-registering of files over and over and over. Perhaps the Internet Explorer 8 upgraded the mshmtl.dll file that was NOT registering. I need to know what services besides BITS and Automatic Updates might be necessary for this .NET service stuff ... there is so much of it. I don't even know if I need it or use it but it seems to be the only thing to have finally made Windows update reflect something! Thank you for your help ..I will try to reboot and go online and start the install again.
