Comcast Broadband

I upgraded my Windows XP with Vista Home Basic. Now my computer is running
slow and crashing. I called my internet provider to find out why its running
slow and crashing and he told me to remove Vista. I than called several other
internet providers and they told me the same thing. However when I talked to
Comcast they told me that Vista would run OK using them as my provider. Does
anyone know if this is true? Should I switch to Comcast? Currently I am using
SBC DSL.

Those internet providers are idiots. You upgraded to Vista problably from
XP that had issues or viruses. You should do a clean install with Vista and
yes you can do that with an upgrade copy.

What are the specifications of your PC? Vista is a resource hog and if you
have a PC that barely meets the requirements, yes it will be slower than XP.

You left out how you connect to the Internet - computer directly
connected to the dsl modem or to a router. If to a modem, what is the
make/model of the modem and do you connect via ethernet or usb? If you
connect directly to the dsl modem via usb, it is probable that the
drivers aren't correct. You would need to check with the modem mftr. for
Vista-compatible drivers. If you connect to the modem directly, post
back with its make/model. Perhaps there is a known issue with that
particular modem.

Normally you don't need any special software to use either dsl or cable
Internet.

Vista works fine with most any service provider. They tell you different
because they have no expertise in trouble shooting a Vista installation. If
you have a modem that connects to your computer via a USB cable you likely
need Vista drivers for that modem. The modem may not have any available.
Check!

Instead of upgrading to Vista install fresh by deleting the OS partition
that is there now. Then create a new partition. Then format the partition.

Before you start the above, backup all necessary data to CD's or DVD's.

Before you start the above, make certain that there are Vista drivers
available for all of your hardware.

You will have to reinstall your chosen programs after the new install. Make
certain they will run under Vista.

The guy has an issue with his internet provider. The guy doesn't need to
install a server product and tweak it to run like a desktop. That is for
more experienced users. Don't you understand that concept? A BETA product
of a SERVER OS isn't the answer to each and every problem out there. It
seems like that is your only suggestion. Install Windows Server 2008 Public
Beta. You must be a simpleton.

Are you serious? Why would someone replace a workstation OS with a server
operating system to solve a problem like this? And a beta version of it no
less. It would be way more expensive to say the very least (I know...betas
are generally free but it won't be beta forever). And that is the least of
the reasons not to do this. Not to be insulting...but that is a pretty dumb
suggestion. You are likely either a troll or a former USPS employee. Just

Your PC should have a minimum of 1GB of memory (even though it will work
with 512MB) but it will be slow. An Intel Celeron running at 1.6 will not
run Vista well. You will be better off with XP. I had an old PC (3-4 years
old) running a Pentium 3.0 GHz with 1GB and Vista ran slow with it.

Even if you upgrade memory your system will be slow compared to XP. Yes,
the internet providers are still idiots :-), but this time they were correct
suggesting that you stick with XP with your current configuration.
