after a year of this problem I finally found the basic problem but cant
figure out why the problem exists.
Running SP2, when I run Windows update pretty much (not checked rigorously)
every
update replaces COMCTL32.dll with a newer version,,,seems to be from 08/2006
Problem is once the new version is there, the system resets DURING windows
startup , including SAFE MODE. So in otherwords every update breaks windows.
I've done some rearch and found that the latest version of COMCTL32 should
be 890K vs 611k , so update is not using the latest file

You seem to run Windows XP SP2 and mean KB923191 (MS06-057).
You may want to download and install
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...f-fa42367796d4
prior reinstalling KB923191 (MS06-057) once again.

Bye,
Freudi

Thanks but while that MIGHT be a fix, the symptoms dont match
I finally woke up and did a search on my PC for that file and got no less
than 15 results!.. Turns out lots of KB updates have it . Dont know why but
soon as I found the newest version 6002999xxxx and replaced my system copies,
my problem appears permanently fixed

So trying the installation of KB884883 isn't an option for you?
The update includes a new version of explore.exe too...

And where did that version of comctl32.dll came from? In which
folder did you found that version?
