Command to force Automatic Updates

I'm testing if Automatic Updates are working, and I ran wuauclt.exe
/detectnow and wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow to try to force
Automatic Updates instead of waiting the Automatic Update preset time.

When I ran the command line above, network activity icon in the systray
blinks and nothing happens, I wait 15 minutes and still nothing happens.

By the way, the preset time for Automatic Update also does not trigger
anything.

When I manually go to Windows Update and scan the computer there is about 8
critical updates that need to be installed.

I'm logged in as administrator, XPSP2 firewall is off, I can get to the
internet okay, no WSUS server is involved, I'm just trying to get to
Microsoft's Windows Update.

This is a fresh install of XPSP2 using WSUS client.

Does Automatic Update need a certain port to work?

Is there a log file I can look at?

Thanks

XP needs no WSUS client. It sounds as though your asking the system to
contact a networked WSUS server.
The relevant log is located in %windir% and is named WindowsUpdate.log.
Have you checked the Event Viewer, System events, to see if there are
any pertinent messages concerning Windows Update Agent ?
AU uses ports 80 and 443, I believe.
