Communication Problem

I am trying to use messenger between two Vista Machines. The invitations go
out and area accepted. The person trying to accepts inputs the passwords.
However no prompt comes back. When the roles are reversed (i.e. I request
assistance), and the password is provided their computer tries to connect to
mine (requesting assistance). It gets an error that the connection cannot be
established. Does anyone have any suggestions on how this can be resolved.
I thought it might be a firewall issue but even when I lower the firewall it
does not seem to work. I cannot seem to get the diaglogue box with the other
persons desktop.

If there is anyone who has an answer to this, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi EML,
I'm having same problem and have posted a question on this forum. Jonathan
Kay replied and said that one thing one can do is to go into task manager and
end process mrsa.exe and try again. I think there is more to the problem than
that so I'm sure discussion isn't over yet. I also connect with XP machine
from same Vista desktop and don't have some issues although not perfect.

Hi Nick.....Tried that, still does not work. Do you think it might be a
firewall problem. My feeling is that it is not since I have dropped all the
firewalls when using this and it still does not work. In this case it
actually does work the other way. When I have the other person request the
assistance, rather than me offer it they get as far as their computer trying
to connect but I again see nothing. Their computer comes back and says that
it is unable to establish a connection. Than ks very much for the response,
I hope that we both find something on this one.....it has been driving me
crazy for the last several days.

Hi EML, I don't think it is a firewall problem either as on occassions, often
after a reboot, it works. Did you end process on both machines or just on the
one? I haven't tested it myself as it was Jonathan Kay that gave me the
advice same day. I have similar problems that might relate to this one. For
example it happens quite often that I cannot access the Internet from MSN
Messenger, IE7 and Skype, yet Windows Live Mail can! Running the Connection
test suite in Live Messenger I get report that there is a problem with Key
Ports. I've tried all kinds of things like turning off firewall (Mcafee) etc
but cannot solve problem. I thought perhaps it was a problem in my Router
(Netgear) but other machines going through that router seem to be OK.

Greetings Nick,

This is on Vista right? If so, what you're describing is usually a incompatibility with
Vista's new network auto tuning feature.

To turn off this feature, open up an elevated command prompt and type the following:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

If you're unsure what I mean by an "elevated command prompt", this explains it:

Jonathan,

Yes it was on Vista? I've typed the command in so I'll have to see what
happens over next few days. I'll let you know. How long will that command
last? If only until I restart machine then is there a way I can go through
Network & Sharing Centre to set it up permanently.

Many thanks

Nick

Hi Nick,

It's permanent. The only way to turn it back on is to go through the process again with
autotuning=enabled.

Hi Nick I have seen the discussion between you and Johnathan. I will also
try this. The word I got back from microsoft is the enabling of the 3389
port. Did that and it also does not appear to work. I will try what
Johnathan is suggesting although I am not sure whether this will work. I
will let you know.

Nick:

Do you have the port 3389 enabled? If so did this work for you?
