My grandson's computer suddenly lost internet access after an update a day
or two ago. No ZoneAlarm, just XP's firewall, and nothing I could do would
restore connectivity; I checked, disconnected, rebooted everything, the
event viewer said a computer already existed with that name (yet it
connected to the network fine, accepted an IP address, and could see other
computers that were connected to the internet through that very network.
A system restore to 8 days ago didn't help. I undid the restore, then
changed the name, no go. Ran the troubleshooters, said to call my ISP,
which is wrong. Ran the IC wizard, no good. Kicked myself for not having a
recent system backup of his computer. Then I tried a restore from 9 days
ago, and was thrilled to see it worked.
Now I look in here and find out it's an update, and so will probably
automatically ruin things again. And I shouldn't disable it because it's an
important security update? That kind of security I don't need...keeping it
from connecting to the internet at all is not the kind of security that most
of us want.
For some reason he didn't yet automatically get SP3 (XPHomeSP2); perhaps
I'll do a backup and install it, and then hope that stupid new "security"
update doesn't mess things up again.
While I agree that disabling all firewalls is practically electronic suicide
(and it may be too late), saying they need to leave the update there when it
breaks internet connection and defies repair is somewhat unreasonable, and
unlikely to be heeded unless there's a fix....I certainly wouldn't sit there
without internet, just to know that I have the latest security update...8^)
