I have a Dell 1536 with Vista SP1 preinstalled. I want to open a doc o
a rescue disc. The doc was created in Word Office 98 on an XP. It has
password. Of course it won’t open. The error message reads: ::\"Work
cannot open \"E:\XXXXX.DOC\". The file may be in use by anothe
application, the file format may not be supported by any of th
installed converters, or the file may be corrupt.” And also of course
neither Dell nor Microsoft will help unless I pay money, which I won’t
Is this hopeless? Is there any chance I could install my Office 9
program without major issues?:

Word Viewer:

I am not aware of a Windows version called "Office 98".
Isn't that a MAC version?

I think you mean Office 97.

I believe you will have big problems with it. Office 2000 and earlier
don't get along with Windows, if I remember correctly.

It sounds like your trying to open a MS word doc with MS Works. that
isn't going to work. If you have access to a PC with MS Word installed
it should open. One other option might be to download OpenOffice 3

http://download.openoffice.org/ It might do the job. I don't use it but
others here should be able to confirm if it will or will not work.

The .doc needs a password or the rescue disc needs a password? What program
created this rescue disc?

It looks like you're trying to use MS Works to open an MS Word
document. I won't work. Download the Word viewer referred to
by the previous post by Alan Edwards.

For the record: Microsoft Works can open a Word document.
Run Works word processor > File > Open > Files of type > choose .doc and
click on desired file.
