Check the applications system requirements and you should know which version
of Windows is most sutable. For instance, you will see 'Designed for Windows
XP, 2000 or a combination of both.

Hi - How do you know which compatibility setting to use if a program is not
running properly in Vista? I know that you pick the last known operating
system it worked under or pick what the program or game says is required
under compatibility mode. However, how do I know what to pick for the
settings? Thanks!

Just guess, first try Windows XP, then 2000, ME, 98, 95, etc.
