I know that the complete pc back up feature is not available on Vista Home
Premium. Does anyone have an recommendations on what software I could use
that I could perform complete back ups. Returning to the "pre everything"
state is not a comfortable feeling if something should go wrong. I assume
that anyone making a recommendation knows that this software is compatible
with Vista.

Acronis True Image 10 is probably the best software I have ever used for
creating a full backuip image of a harddrive. It's fast and intuitive, and
completely compatible with Vista.

The thing I like best about TI is that once you create a full backup image,
you can recover the entire image or just recover single files very easily.

Not much left to say - Acronis True Image (And Director's Suite) has saved
my butt several times while evaluating software. Acronis will create a
recovery partition in addition to backing up to an internal or external
drive - in addition you can schedule incremental, differential or full
backups to the recovery partition (Secure Zone) and other backup location.

I just purchased a HP laptop with Vista Home Premium preloaded, and like
Phyllis I want to make a full system back up. Do I really have to buy 3rd
party software for another $50 to do so? Does MSFT not have another way for
us to download a program to back up our program files? Can we not download
the complete PC back up wizard that comes with Vista Business etc?

Hi,

In short, no. With the Home versions you only get the more limited version
to backup files. There is no download or other means to change it to the
complete pc backup package included in the business and ultimate versions.

In short, no. Offering features available in more expensive available
to cheaper version for free would defeat the purpose of having tiered
releases.

Sorry, only licensed users of Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate have
access to the Complete PC Backup feature. I personally believe Microsoft
should have made it available to all the SKUs. I believe everybody's data
regardless which OS it is running on is important and Microsoft ensured that
the best recovery experience and tools were included in Vista across the
board. But hey, at least you can backup your files and folders.

When you turn your PC on - during boot do you see something like "HitF11 for
system restore....". If so it indicates a restore partition on the PC - I
know of no OEM that does not provide a restore partition (re DVD), Ussually
a utility is also provided to copy the partition to removeable medi.

Check your documention and best option get a third party backup program
suchas Acronis.
