I have an external USB 2.0 disk drive that's dedicated to storage of
system image backups.

Drive currently has one system image on it, recorded end of April. I
want to keep this image pristine.

I've heard that if existing backup images are over 30 days old, an
additional, new backup image will be created. Is this correct?

Yes, that is what my system does. I have backups from late march and april,
and may. I intend to add a late june by simply starting a complete backup
next week.
