I don't use Vista backup myself - however, it may be that one of the
previous backups has been moved/deleted, in which case resetting the
listing may help.

Otherwise, you could try restarting the pc and see if it works straight
after startup.
If you are looking for a 3rd party app. instead, there are a number to
choose from. Paragon and Acronis are popular products.
Macrium Reflect is an excellent app. - if you only want to do do
drive/partition backups - the free version will do that - and also allow
scheduling. If you also want to do file/folder backups - you need the
paid version.
