Is it possible to only open the compose window when starting Windows Live
Mail on those occasions when I want to send an email and am not interested in
syncing all my accounts ?

Open a new message window and the File | Save As and save it to the
Desktop as an eml file. Use that envelope icon to do what you're looking
for.

There are several ways to do that. Bruce gave you one.

Another is to create a short cut that as its target contains
mailto:
(note the colon at the end.

You can also type that into the address bar of Internet Explorer.

The OP seems to not want that a sync be triggered. So in addition to
the methods given, the OP must disable "Send and receive messages
at startup" and perhaps also "Check for new messages every X minutes"
(depending on how long his composing session lasts).

thanks to all for replying

Hello,

I have tried several variants in my shortcut, but can not get it to access
the New Message window directly.

"C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe" mailto: will not work, nor
will /mailto: nor using upper case.

Could you please let me know the correct syntax for this workaround.

Many thanks

Bert Wicks

for me (Windows 7, Windows Live Mail)

right click on blank area of desktop
hover over 'New'
left click shortcut
'Type the location of the item:'
mailto:

(no slashes, there is a colon at the end)

click Next
give it a name 'NewMail' for instance
click Finish

now double left click the icon on the desktop. In my case this now opens
just the compose window

Your mileage may vary if not Windows 7 or Windows Live Mail, but I would
think it would work that way for other configurations also.

Thank you Michael,

When I read the first post by Michael Santovec, I incorrectly assumed that I
had to put the mailto: after the call to wlmail.exe.

After reading your post, I realised that all I had to do was to instantiate
the shortcut to mailto: as both Michael Santovec and yourself have pointed
out.

My problem is solved - I now have 3 shortcuts - 1 to WLM, 1 to WLM
Newsgroups and 1 to New Message.

Happy New Year.

Bert Wicks
