Sometimes, an OEM version, which is what you have -- O/S and software
installed by the computer manufacture may not be installed properly.
Have you called HP, because you have a limited time software warranty,
about the issues?

(snippage)

1. Back up any data you have.

2. Restore the computer to factory condition. This is usually done in HPs by
pressing F10 as the computer is starting up but refer to your user manual.
Do a full, destructive System Recovery.

3. If the hanging continues after this, immediately return the computer to
the store and get a new one. Do not let Best Buy give you one of its famous
run-arounds. A new computer with no malware should not act like this and if
it does with nothing on it but HP's image, you have hardware problems that
will only get worse.

In December (I think it was) I saw advertisements for an HP laptop at
BestBuy that seemed like a good deal, but when I looked at the customer
reviews, there were *many* reports of unpredictable freezing. I chose to
not buy that computer.

I'm sorry that I can't recall the model number - it might have ended in
1120 - but I can't tell if it matches the OP's computer anyway, because he
didn't give a complete model number.

In other words, I strongly second Malke'a advice.

Try going into "msconfig" and disabling the Carbonite service and the
Carbonite Start-Up and see if the computer freezing stops. If it does,
go back in and turn them both on and see if the freezing re-occurs. I
don't know what the fix is, but I had a similar situation and I isolated
it to Carbonite.
