I suppose it would be ideal if I could borrow someone's DSL connection.
However, I doubt that will happen. As it would happen, I am
thinking of replacing my existing boot partition with a new one with a
fresh XP Pro SP1 (what I have on CD). It would take me even longer to
update via Microsoft Update. Is there a way to copy the downloads that
Microsoft Update has already made to the new partition? That would help.

Yes. On the win update site, go to the catalog instead of the updates and
download them separately to your hard drive.

Forget that. What about the stuff I already downloaded? If I have to
download it anyway, I might as well just use the new partition and
Microsoft Update like normal.

Sure, if they are already downloaded as files. Probably one easy way
is to burn the update files, both old and newly-downloaded, to CD or
copy, as proposed, to the new partition. Next, write a script file to
do the updating. There is a Microsoft KB article on how to write this
script file.

Because I don't need to update many computers on a LAN, I don't do this.
Even when I had multiple computers, it was only two. So I just
updated them seperately. Back then, I had DSL anyway.

It's your short sightedness then.
