Computer Fails To Start After Update

I performed an automated upodate to install security patches etc, and an
NVidia network card update. After rebooting, windows failed to start and
times out and shuts down after the black screen with the loading bar. The
logo does not appear, just the bars. I was able to get a completely black
screen with a cursor at one point, but that was it. My vista disc is at home
(600 miles away) and i am out of state for the summer. Any help?

I have the same problem. I had MS Support on the phone for three hours. The
problem seems to be related to the Tuesday set of patches. Tech support said
to not install KB928365 and KB928366. I do not find either in the list of
patches. It would help me to find out which patches were released on Tuesday.

Hi there,

Taking driver updates from windows updte is really a bad idea unless you
like problems.

Try usung system restore, boot last known good configuration or roll back on
the driver.

If a driver update is needed ( ONLY if the hardware is not working proper!)
you should take it from the manufacturers website.

last known configuration doesn't work, just hangs on me. and can i do a
system restore without the vista disc? i haven't been able to figure out
otherwise.
the real problem is that i don't have my cd, and i'm not living in my home
state this summer. i'd hate to have to fly back to get a cd.

I have been through the revert to previous, repair, reinstall, format and
reinstall. My next tactic is to reinstall the patches one at at time until I
find the culprit. I have been unable to restart without a full quick format
and reinstall.

Before you reinstall XP read through this article:
http://webcast.broadcastnewsroom.com...le.jsp?id=8658

I followed the steps there and got my system back to the point right before
I lost it. It takes a while and only do it if you feel comfortable with the
procedures.
It assumes that you have the XP setup disk.

For me it appears to be update KB936357 is causing the problem. I have a 233
MHz MMX processor. It appears the microcode changes in that patch do not run
on an MMX processor. I ended up doing a quick format and a clean install to
get going. I now need to figure out how to restore the pieces which were
destroyed. I am expecting a followup call from MS sometime tomorrow, Monday.
