Computer Hangs Installing Windows Updates While Shutting Down

I've got a problem with my very elderly mother's Dell Dimension 5150 computer
which runs Windows XP Professional.

When a new release of Windows Updates comes out she shuts the computer down
and the Windows Updates begin installing. At some stage the computer then
hangs and ends up staying on all night still displaying the message
"Installing Update m Of n".

Does anyone have a solution for this?
