Hello

My new computer locks up randomly. Sometimes I can play games for hour
without locking up, other times it locks up within 10 minutes of bootup
once even during bootup after which it gave a BSOD. I don't think it's
heat problem, perhaps my memory or hard drives? Performed scan disk
virus scan, had a few spyware which I cleaned up. Have not performe
memtest, do you think I should

Specs
AMD X2 64 6000
ASRock 780GX
OCZ Reaper 2x2gb PC2 640
Sapphire HD 4870 512m
Seagate Barracuda 250gb SAT
Western Digital 160gb ID
PcPower & Cooling 610watt Silence

Any suggestions

Hi,

> My new computer locks up randomly.

Two clues:

1) It's new

2) It's random

Those two clues say that a) it's hardware and b) you have a warranty. Use
it.

SInce Memtest is included in Vista as an option running it to see if
any faults are detected wouldn't hurt any. If 0% are indicated then you
would simply move on to the next item and take notes on any information
displayed on the BSOD as well as reviewing the information in event
viewer logs. The problem often turns out to be software or device driver
related.

Memtest is a good (and easy) stating point, then hardware (Warranty) as
mentioned. I have found that scanning the drive for errors can help in
some cases (drive>properties>tools whatever)and make sure the drive
isn't being accessed during the apparent "Lock up" as it seems that
occasionally mouse / keyboard can be unresponsive while it's doing
something else... what "Something else" is who knows? Whatever it is it
can seem to go on for a long time.

It's bad form to start a whole new thread, just because you didn't get an
answer you liked in the first one. The advice posted by Rick Rogers two
days ago was excellent, and you won't get much better than that. You have
to pull or swap your new parts, one by one, to find the bad one. That's one
of the down sides to building your own computer. You can't just take the
whole thing back to the store you got it from.

If your IDE is coming off the same controller as your CD/DVD drive, then I
would do something about that. The two devices aren't matched speed-wise,
and that could create performance problems. Otherwise, I don't see anything
wrong with your setup, except that one of the components is locking up your
system. You aren't overclocking, are you?
