New install of Windows Vista Home Premium. Built PC myself. DFI
motherboard. Install went okay and system works ok. When selecting
"Shutdown", the system appears to shutdown but machine will not power off.
Waited a long time. If manually powered off or manually restart, Windows
states was not shutdown incorrectly, does it's thing and boots to desktop. I
do not want to go thru this everytime I use my machine. Also under power
options I changed the power button setting to shut down.

Often this is caused by a driver or some installed software the system is
having trouble unloading. If you've installed no additional software as
yet, start by checking manufacturer websites of all your hardware, both
internal and anything you've connected to the system for the latest Vista
compatible drivers.

If all drivers are the latest, if you happen to have an nVidia graphics
card, there have been a number of issues with nVidia drivers, you might
check their website for additional information about your card as well as
post this to them as last time I checked, there was a link within their
driver downloads to a site where you could post issues and let them know of
on-going problems.

You might also check for any updates for your motherboard, chipset and any
BIOS issues that might be addressed by an update.

You can also check the Event Viewer under Administrative Tools in Control
Panel. Since you have this issue each time you shut down, there should be
an error that repeats in the log. The information included with the error
may give a hint as to the source of the problem.

Also, is anything connected externally? If yes, try disconnecting the
device from the system, not just turn it off, disconnect the device and see
if you have the issue. If you have more than one device, disconnect them
one at a time, reboot, then shutdown, after each one to see if you still
have the issue.
