When I try to run with v4, it sits at 66% for a long time, then shows
multiple updates available in Crit/XP, but drivers is grayed out, and
if I click on on anything, it times out and I get nothing.

The error I get from Windows Update.log is 0x80072ef1.

I then tried v5. I got the "Install Now" button, then clicked on
"Custom Install". After about a minute of seeing the green bar moving
on my screen, I get error 0x80072ee2. The same error appears when I
try the "Express Install"

Going through both v4 and v5 troubleshooters found no matches to these
error numbers.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Larry,

Have you had a look at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941 ?

Also, are you using Internet Explorer to access Windows Update?

Cheers.

I am using Internet Explorer.

There are no proxies or firewalls involved, so many of the suggestions
listed on the web page wouldn't apply, but I'll try the others when I
get a chance to.

Thanks

Doing a little thinking after reading a post asking about port
numbers, and someone answered "80 and 113".

I'm wondering if that might be the key to my wife's problem here.

She is using a DLink router on her DSL connection with
factory-settings (I had her hit the reset button, and do no other
configuration changes). I don't remmeber the model off hand, I can
ask her; but would a router out of the box block port 113?
