Computer re-booting when playing games

Hi,

I am having some issues when playing games. The following games cause my
PC to re-boot after a random amount of time.

World of Warcraft
Company of Heroes
Splinter Cell Double Agent
Ghost Recon Advanced Warrior

The only game i've managed to play so far without a re-boot is supreme
commander.

My system consists of:

Vista Ultimate 32-bit Edition
Intel QX6700 CPU
Abit AW9D-Max Motherboard
2GB OCZ 1150 Mhz 9200 Ram
Asus NVIDIA 8800 GTX 768 Graphics Card

I have updated the following:

Motherboard Bios & chipset etc...
Vista updates
Graphic card updates 158.24 driver

I can't tell whether its a Vista problem or a hardware issue but being as
though supreme commander worked I think it is definately software related.

No other issues with Vista and my system seems very stable.

Anyone had similar problems or know of a fix?????

Could be a overheating issue, the 8800 GTX runs warm at times.
Try running these games with your case side removed and see if you get the
same results.
If this solves the problem, sit and look ate the air flow through your case
and see if it can be made better.

I had actually been running the system with the side off and the problem
still happened. The case is a Thermaltake Kandalf with a 25cm fan on the
side and 3 other case fans.

I could understand the overheating issue if it happened on all games but
supreme commander seems to run fine.

might run a temp/fan monitor program to see what is going on.
I use Speed Fan.

also might turn off the REBOOT on error option.
System Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery tab.

I tried speed fan and the CPU cores run between 35 and 41 degrees. I took
off the re-boot on error option and the same problem occured.

Ok, i installed speed fan and ran World of Warcraft. My CPU cores go up to
53 to 58 degrees almost instantly and the small fire symbol appears at the
side of the reading.

This must be the problem with my system shutting down, although my
motherboard
does not beep and the settings for shutdown are much higher.

I use a Tuniq Tower 120 which should be ample for the CPU. I used thermal
paste supplied with the cooler so I don't see why it should overheat.

The graphics card is also pretty hot.

How do I go about solving these issues as the hardware I have should be fine.

first thing I would do is get some canned air and blow it out good.
paying attention to the cpu and graphic fans. check the fans for caked up junk.

having a cat I sometimes have to use tweezers and pull the hair out.
that happens even with 2 hepa air cleaners running.

All the components are brand new (2 weeks old) so there is no dust build up.

I fitted a new CPU cooler (the one that came with the chip) and the max temp
it went to was 60 degrees running 3D mark06, I assume this is ok as I read on
some website that they had it as high as 70+. I am now pretty sure that it
is not the CPU that is overheating.

I think it points to the graphics card and I will try a new one to check.
If that doesn't work then it must be software related, possibly games not
fully compatible with Vista (who knows).

If the problem persists after that then i'm totally out of ideas and things
to try.

This is your problem! " I used thermal paste supplied with the cooler"

Take it back off, clean both surfaces well and use Arctic Silver instead!

Makes a big difference!! Just be real sure to CLEAN both surfaces and
properly prepare the heat sink surface first.
