In Control Panel choose Problem Reports and Solutions (type problem in
Start's searchbox), right click your error and choose Check For Solution.
You can also examine the details.

In Administrative Tools choose Reliability and Performance Monitor and
choose MonitoringTools then Reliability Monitor (type Reliability in search
on Start) . This list a chart of software installs, uninstalls, Windows
updates, and crashes. See if your crashes started happening after you
installed or uninstalled something.

Also run Memory Diagnostics (type memory in Start's search box).

Also check your harddisk by typing in a command prompt
chkdsk c: /r

Also try (to repair damaged system files)
sfc /scannow

You can run it from a command prompt.

Was there an error message for the crash?

Type command in Start's Search box, right click Command Prompt and choose
Run As Administrator. Then type

chkdsk c: /r

sfc /scannow

It will take hours to run chkdsk.

What happened in Problem reports?

There is no point in you going through all the sfc /scannow, etc. stuff
suggested by the other poster. You have hardware issues and software
solutions will do nothing.

There are many other reasons your computer could be doing this besides
overheating. You could have a bad power supply, motherboard, processor, RAM,
etc. *And* the machine could be overheating.

If the computer is under warranty, call Dell tech support. If not, take it
to a competent local computer tech. Don't use a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad
type of place. It is unlikely that you are going to be able to diagnose and
fix this yourself but if you want to try, start here:

If the machine just shuts off and doesn't attempt to restart, you're
describing hardware failure, and that can't be fixed with software.

The only way to fix it is to replace the failed components, and
unfortunately, the only practical way to do that is to swap in known-good
hardware; that means you have to *have* replacement components on hand.

I would suggest that you start looking for a replacement system, and making
sure your data is safe.
